How to get a bar job in Australia with no experience

Responsible Sales of Alcohol (RSA)

Firstly, Australia requires you to have an RSA certification to serve alcohol. It is inexpensive and only takes one or two days to complete online.

Edit your CV

Review your CV to evaluate possible improvements that could be made to make you stand out against other candidates. These changes can involve highlighting any hospitality-related experience. This does not necessarily need to be experience from a previous job but could be activities such as volunteering you may have completed outside of professional work experience.

Gain some experience

Something I noted as a ‘foot-in-the-door’ if you are going in completely blind with no experience behind the bar is to apply to a cluster of bars and taverns within your desired location, starting with the establishments that are your least preferred.

This way, when you are invited for a trial shift, you can treat it as a crash course and ask as many questions as possible to gain experience. If you are not chosen for the role, at least now you know what is expected of you from a bar job and you can regard this as a type of practice, so you would have gained something valuable if not the actual job.

Apply for the places you want to work at

Once you have gained experience by doing trial shifts, apply for the places where you want to work. You will now have more experience than you did prior and will stand a much better chance at landing a job at your desired establishment.
