How will the new UK-Australia trade deal affect me as a traveller on a working holiday visa?

From the 1st of July 2024, there will be major changes to the requirements for a WHV (working holiday visa).

Scrapping of the 88 days!

Firstly, you will no longer need to complete your 88 days of regional or specified work! That means you can work wherever you wish or wherever you can and still be granted your second or third year visa without having to grind out 88 days of hard labour on a farm.

Age limit increases!

Secondly, you will be able to apply for your working holiday visa up until the age of 35 instead of 30. That means as long as you submit your application the day before your 36th birthday you will be eligible for a WHV.

Here are a couple of examples to illustrate how the changes may impact you.

Jennie entered the country on the 1st of August 2023, on her first WHV. She will be able to apply for her second year visa without completing her 88 days of farm work. As long as her visa is processed before the 1st of August 2024 she can remain in the country. If not, she will have to leave until it is approved.

Neil and Jess entered the country on the 29th of July 2023. They have two options:

1 – Complete the 88 days of specified or regional work and apply for a second WHV without leaving Australia.

2 – Leave Australia before the 29th of March 2024 without completing the 88 days of work and reapply after the 1st of July from outside of Australia.
