1 – Get a SIM card for your phone and activate it
You will be able to purchase a SIM card from most local News Agency stores. Getting an Australian SIM is arguably the most important first step as you’ll need a contact number for any subsequent applications (such as opening a bank account).
2 – Open a bank account
I opted for the Commonwealth Bank. You can complete the bulk of the process online from home or from your accommodation. However, to finalise it you’ll need to go into the bank within 20 days to show ID.
3 – Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN)
You will need this number when you are employed in any job for tax purposes. It can be done reasonably quickly and easily on the Australian Government website. It can take up to 28 days to arrive.
